Old World Deli sells quality sandwiches, like gyros, corned beef sandwiches, and clubs, but have you ever stopped to wonder how these sandwiches came to be?

The History of the Gyro

The gyro, a very well known sandwich throughout the world, is said to have originated in the country of Greece in the early 1900s. In Greece, the meat, sometimes referred to as "mystery meat," is usually made of

pork, chicken, or even veal, and is served with a variety of toppings. The bread, or pitas, come in three different types in most restaurants: "plain," "Cypriot," and "Arabic." The most common is the plain pita; 20 cm in diameter and thicker than the other two options. The Cypriot is crisp and has a larger size. The Arabic is crisp, the flattest, and the largest of all three choices. With the wide varieties of bread and toppings offered, Greece's gyros are sure to not disappoint.

Gyros appeared in the United States between 1965 and 1968. This Greek food, however, didn't become popular in the US until the mid 1970s, where it was said to have originated in Chicago. Now, the gyro is served throughout the country, and even the world, satisfying people's taste buds with every bite. Gyros in the US are made from a combination of beef and lamb. Chicken Gyros are also common. The bread from the gyro resembles the Greek "plain" pita, and toppings vary from restaurant to restaurant.
